Beach Coast to coast Kayaking

The Cabo de Gata Natural Park is a perfect getaway for those seeking unspoiled coves with crystal-clear waters, otherworldly landscapes, traditional Andalusian white villages and a touch of adventure.

Several towers and forts were built along the coastline to defend against attacks from Barbary pirates. On this route you will pass by several of them.
It’s advice that applies to any trip and circumstances, but especially in this case: pick up all your trash, remember that you are in a Natural Park and a unique place in Spain.
We recommend kayaking in Las Sirenas Reef.

Explore Cabo de Gata in 2 days

DAY 1

Kayak trip to Las Sirenas Reef

Discover one of the most spectacular places on the Cabo de Gata, and its most popular kayaking route. As an alternative, you can enjoy the marvelous view from the observation point next to the lighthouse.

Playa de los Genoveses

This spacious beach with its fine sand is framed by an idyllic setting. The remains of a Spanish Civil War bunker can be found at one end.

Playa de Mónsul

A truly spectacular beach, mainly thanks to the enormous crag that divides it in two, a feature that has attracted the attention of several film directors (for example, it appears in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade).
There is a public car park (€5), but you can also get there by a bus that departs from San José (€1).

DAY 2

Playa los Escullos

The fossilized dunes have created some very unusual formations in the rock (one is reminiscent of a coyote’s mouth). It is a wide beach with black sand and calm waters. Moreover, at its southern tip you can see the Castillo de San Felipe, a fort built by order of King Carlos III. However, right next door there is a nightclub (yes, you read that correctly) that completely breaks the spell...

La Isleta del Moro

A small fishing village in the heart of Cabo de Gata. It owes its name to the crag that rises up in front of the town, and to a Barbary pirate who used to frequent it. It has two pleasant coves and an observation point from which you have the best views of the peaks of the Los Frailes Volcano.

Playa de los Muertos

Its crystal-clear waters and surroundings make it not only one of the most beautiful beaches in Cabo de Gata, but also throughout all of Spain.

Before you travel

  • In this area of eastern Almería, the wind can pose a problem. Check the forecast and try to avoid days when it picks up.
  • Parking lots at the beaches usually have limited spaces, so don't be surprised if you don't find a spot in high season.
  • Buy travel insurance. For most people, this is only necessary if you are traveling outside of your home country. However, it's always good to be secured.

Mochileando por el mundo

Traveling and eating are Rober and Lety’s greatest passions in life. For the last 10 years, the couple have documented their adventures on their blog “Mochileando por el Mundo” (Backpacking around the World). They have experienced it all on their travels: from marveling at a sunrise in Myanmar and catching a bus with a goat on the roof in the Philippines, to swimming at night underneath the Milky Way in New Zealand and falling in love with an island in Indonesia. Who knows what the future holds for them! Their motto is: if your dream is many people’s dreams, then dream harder.
